Thursday: Review and Gizmo

Students reviewed potential energy, kinetic energy and the Law of Conservation of Energy in preparation for the assessment at the end of the week.  In addition, students logged into their Gizmo accounts and used an interactive simulation to explore how mass, position, speed and friction impact potential and kinetic energy.  More information is in Google Classroom.

ASSIGNMENTS:

  • REVISE any science assignments receiving less than a 3 in Infinite Campus
  • Energy Test at the end of the week
  • Mandatory Homework Club Thursday – required for any student missing science assignments in Infinite Campus

Tuesday: The Law of Conservation of Energy

Today in class students will be learning about the Law of Conservation of Energy.  Information about it can be found here: Text – The Law of Conservation of Energy

Students will need to work with their groups to take notes in their notebooks.  Groups with additional time should also use information from these links:

We also applied the law to these two experiments:

ASSIGNMENTS:

  • REVISE any science assignments receiving less than a 3 in Infinite Campus
  • Energy Test at the end of the week
  • Mandatory Homework Club Thursday – required for any student missing science assignments in Infinite Campus

Monday: Review Day

Today in class we reviewed Infinite Campus and expectations regarding HOWLs grades in Science Class.  Students were able to see their returned Claim, Evidence and Reasoning Statements from last week in Google Classroom.  Students also had a short activity reviewing potential and kinetic energy.

ASSIGNMENTS:

  • REVISE any science assignments receiving less than a 3 in Infinite Campus
  • Energy Test at the end of the week
  • Mandatory Homework Club Thursday – required for any student missing science assignments in Infinite Campus

Friday: Knowledge Check and Skate Park PHET

Students have a Knowledge Check reviewing what they have learned about kinetic and potential energy.  Following this, students are using an online interactive where they will need to apply what they know about energy to a skateboarder.

Here is a link to the interactive.  Students will need to get a paper copy of the worksheet from Ms Lea.

ASSIGNMENTS:

  • Ball Lab CER Statement due by the end of the day (in Google Classroom)

Wednesday/Thursday: Claim, Evidence, Reasoning Statements from Ball Drop Lab

Students are working in Google Classroom to complete Claim, Evidence, Reasoning Statements based on their Ball Drop Lap from earlier in the week.  See complete assignment details in Google Classroom.

ASSIGNMENTS:

  • Ball Lab CER Statement due by the end of the week
  • Energy Knowledge Check (practice quiz) will be in class on Friday (Thursday for Core A), students should be sure that their science notebooks are up to date

Tuesday & Wednesday: Ball Drop Lab

This week students are investigating how height and mass impact potential and kinetic energy by dropping golf balls and ping pong balls on the floor from different heights.  See the directions here:

Assignments:

  • Infographic due by the end of the day Tuesday (turn into the classroom box)
  • Ball Lab CER Statement due by the end of the week
  • Energy Knowledge Check (practice quiz) will be in class on Friday, students should be sure that their science notebooks are up to date

Monday: Potential and Kinetic Energy Infographic

Today students had time to complete their Potential and Kinetic Energy Infographics that they started last week.  Directions are here: Potential and Kinetic Energy Infographics. The complete assignment is posted in Google Classroom.  Please contact me if you are having trouble accessing your child’s google classroom account.

ASSIGNMENTS:

  • Infographic due by the end of the day Tuesday (turn into the classroom box)
  • Energy Knowledge Check (practice quiz) will be in class on Friday, students should be sure that their science notebooks are up to date

Thursday and Friday: Cars and Ramps Lab Follow-Up

Students are working on their Claim, Evidence, Reasoning statements base on their car and ramp lab.  Directions are here: Cars and Ramps Lab Follow-Up

Students also joined their science  Google Classrooms and have begun a short assignment making an infographic about potential and kinetic energy.  More information in Google Classroom.

ASSIGNMENTS:

  • Cars and Ramps CER statement written in Science Notebooks by end of day Friday
  • Potential and Kinetic Energy Infographic due Tuesday

Tuesday and Wednesday: Cars and Ramps Lab

Students are conducting an experiment today to test what they know about energy within a system.  Students will be using changes in height or mass to have a toy car push a tissue box across the floor.  Students will be collecting data, thinking about independent and dependent variables, using controls, and making a scatter plot of their results.  Following the lab day, students will work on making a “Claim, Evidence, Reasoning” statement based on their findings.

Assignments:

  • Complete lab paper and Claim, Evidence, Reasoning statement in notebook by the end of the week.
